Biography

Leontine von Littrow

Camilla Leontine von Littrow was born in Trieste in 1860. The von Littrows are an old Austrian aristocratic family. Her father was Head of Triest’s Maritime Academy, her uncle a renowned astronomer, which put Leontine into an intellectual setting growing up. Also, her father’s occupation was the reason she came to see a lot in the Trieste and Abbazia regions, which later used as sujets by the landscape painter.
Leo von Littrow was greatly influenced by French Impressionist during her time of study at Jean d’Alheim in Paris. Her trips to Istria and Dalmatia with her colleague and friend Olga Wisinger-Florian were the origin and inspiration of many of Leo’s paintings. Her paintings were already part of exhibitions in Vienna and Munich during her lifetime, and she was the only woman asked to decorate rooms of the Kunsthistorisches Museum with her artwork. This highlights the importance of Leontine’s art. Von Littrow died in Abbazia, her hometown, in 1925.
